Dieting is hard. Dieting is especially hard when eating out. It is a whole lot tougher to control portions and calories when you are not in control of the margarine and cooking oil. It is difficult, but not impossible to keep those New Years resolutions and still not have to do the dishes. Here are a few things you can do to keep your weight under control when eating out.

When you first get to the restaurant, drink some iced or sparkling mineral water. A friend of mine used to drink at least 8 oz of water with lemon before every meal. Water makes you feel full and will keep you from indulging in that super hunger binge. You can also dampen your appetite with tomato or V8 juice. Another pre-dinner tip, if you don’t want to ruin that twenty minutes of jogging you did on the treadmill earlier, do yourself a favor and don’t fill up on bread before the meal, since this probably won’t replace one of your courses, but will replace plenty of calories.

Don’t be afraid to ask the waiter about the menu. Most restaurants should have information on how the dishes have been cooked (for example grilled or fried) and whether they have a lot of cream, butter, or cheese in them. Order a salad or soup with you main entrée to help fill you up and consider sharing a main entrée. Avoid heavy, creamy or fried entrées at all possible cost. Ask the waiter to grill fish or meat without butter or sauce, or request the sauce to be served on the side so you can have a taste without drowning your meal in it. Also, remember to eat slowly and talk, talk, talk. The more you talk, the less you will eat.  Dieticians will tell you it is important to try and listen to your stomach’s point of fullness. When your body says stop, stop. The old idea of eating everything on your plate is just that, old. Chefs can often be generous with portion sizes. You don’t have to eat everything that’s served. Just eat enough to feel satisfied and comfortable. If getting what you paid for concerns you, ask for leftovers in a doggie bag to take home.

We all like dessert but it is definitely a diet killer. However, if you must have it, go for a fruit based dessert and share it with a friend. This way you can still have a taste of the sweet life without overdoing it.  I know the chocolate ice cream brownie is what you really wanted, but an extra hour of working out on the elliptical is probably not how you wanted to top off the evening. Don’t forget, if you order an after dinner coffee, make it black, or ask for skim milk and use artificial sweetener. Stay away from the Mocha’s and the Latte’s.

Another calorie catcher is alcohol. It’s easy to over consume when you’re having a good time. It’s okay to enjoy some wine or beer but sip it slowly and pace it out. Drink plenty of water and order sparkling mineral water or diet soda to sip in between drinks.

Remember, it’s not home cooking! Sit back and enjoy the fact that tonight you are in a dish free zone, but bear in mind that chefs love to add fat to every dish in the form of butter, cream, sour cream, coconut milk, olive oil or meat juices. It is what makes everything taste so good! If it tastes rich and fatty, it probably is! Take the time to check it out before dishing it up.
